Tyrrell at The Nest

Light Buzz number 50!  I guess that’s something, nice round number…wee half century!

Been super busy at work, the end of the last project and full steam ahead into the next one.  It’s good busy, but doesn’t leave a lot of headspace for creativity once the week is done.

Ok, so what have I got this time…few weeks ago…Bloody hell it rained! There I was driving into the city on Friday night to meet my legend friend Lotte for a shoot, and all the way in I was thinking “no way I’m doing anything tonight, might not even get out the car!”.

The rain was so heavy, that the wipers on my little car were doing the crazy fast wiping level 3.  Didn’t stop my fellow Melbourne drivers doing their usual wacky races on the highway – speeding, tailgating, lane hopping…all that fun stuff!  That a rant for another time.

So when I finally got to the city, my spirits lifted, catching up with my bestie and the rain had stopped.  We both knew what that meant.  PUDDLES!

But first…I brought in the drone, wasn’t gonna bother, but I’m so glad I did.  We headed to Docklands and found a quiet spot to see if it would actually fly.  The software is pretty clever, since it’s all based on satellite and GPS, for example, I live pretty close to an airport so I can’t even take off in the garden because I’m within 5km.  Just a simple programmed no fly zone.  Technically, you aren’t supposed to fly at night.  Although, technically, it was twilight…that’s my excuse.  Arguably you can also see it better in line of sight (also a requirement) because it’s got lights that show up way better when it's dark.  Anyway, I had no issue with flying and I got some cracking images that I’m delighted with.  Hope you like them too!

So, back to those puddles.

These are basically perfectly placed mirrors for the humble street wandering night photographer.  Get down low and you open up to a whole world of reflected goodness.  All those city lights get echoed on the ground before your eyes.  So many opportunities to be creative which just aren’t there during the day or when it’s dry.

Launching the first set of prints from the road trip to Tyrrell.  These 6 selected works will also be on display in my local café in https://thenestcafeandgrocer.com.au/ @ 143 Mcdonald Street, Mordialloc.  I’m trying to make these a little more affordable, so they are available locally as mounted prints – importantly, not framed.  Framing is actually the most expensive part of this.  I’d love to be able to say otherwise, but it’s true.  As you know I’m not out to make buckets of profit, so my margins are small.  Sadly, when I outsource things like framing it’s just what it is. My framer does use reclaimed wood from house renovations to create custom handmade framing in an environmentally sustainable way.  The wood is 100% recycled and in doing so I support a small business trying to get by.  Your other option is if you want to source your own framing which you are more than welcome to do.

So these are now available in the online store and are the first published ‘Project’ on the website. Enjoy.

Sorry, still not much in the way of light painting, hopefully this will keep you going for a bit!

Cheers for now
