Spiraling…

…No, not out of control, just some super effective light painting for your enjoyment.

Light painting spirals is a super effective and easily achievable technique. These are studio shots, and like almost all of the light painting works they are a single long exposure shot within the camera. No digital tricks. No Photoshop. No AI!

The set up - The studio is in darkness of course. I’ve got my camera set on a small stool pointing directly up to the ceiling. Using the fitting of the LED light in the ceiling I’ve suspended a torch secured with string like a pendulum. Using light blade attachments to the torch, I set it spinning around, sometimes having wound the string as well so that it unwinds at the same time as it spins around above the camera, gradually losing momentum. Such a simple set up giving spectacular results I think you will agree.

So the four shots above, as different as they are, are almost exactly the same with regards the set up. As I described above, suspended from the ceiling a torch and a blade or pair of blades of some sort. Sometimes fixed colours, other times I’ve got remote colour change tools for the torch.
I love, love, LOVE that first one here. I’ve named it Clock Moves Sideways, after a banging track from long time favourite singer Fish. The final track on his 2001 album, Fellini Days. As you might notice i name my works after songs. Music is my other obsession, and given naming images was always a challenge for me i decided to merge the interests. Basically, any image name i give is pretty much a recommendation from me to you for a song to go check out. My tastes are extremely mixed (i think), not mainstream, a little off the beaten track. Fish is retired now, releasing his final studio album during the COVID days a couple of years ago. He does a podcast broadcast via facebook each week though where he updates on his projects (remasters and the like) as well as stories from his career and the inspirations for his lyrics. and he is very lyrical. He calls himself a ‘Warrior Poet’. https://fishmusic.scot/

Clock Moves Sideways is available now in the store with 2 new other works. Check them out here.
